How to Track Athlete Progress in Track and Field
A sprinter runs 13.2, then 13.4, then 13.1 across three Saturdays. Is that progress, a plateau, or just a headwind down the straight? One meet result cannot answer that. Progress in track and field becomes visible only when you line up numbers over time and read each one in context.
To track athlete progress in track and field, record three layers for every athlete: competition marks from meets, controlled test-day numbers you can repeat under identical conditions, and short notes on technique. Then compare each number against that same athlete's own history and their age division, never against the rest of the squad.

Competition marks are the results everyone already sees. They are official and they matter, but they swing with the weather, the depth of the field, and how many rounds an athlete has already run that day. Test-day numbers fix what meet results cannot control. You run the same test the same way every few weeks: the same start line, the same rest, the same surface. For sprinters and hurdlers, the headline number is the full-distance time, but the useful detail sits in the parts. For your distance runners, race times matter, and so do target-pace splits and a repeated time trial over a fixed loop. Benchmarking by Age and Division
A mark means nothing until you know who produced it and when. Youth track and field is organized into two-year age divisions, and a 12-year-old and a 14-year-old are not competing under the same conditions even in the same event. Those divisions do more than sort heats. In the throws, the implement gets heavier as athletes move up, so a shot put or javelin distance is only comparable within the same division and weight. When a thrower ages up into a heavier implement, expect the raw distance to drop, then climb again over the following weeks. That dip is not a regression. Your notes should say so plainly, because this is where a throw most often looks like lost progress when the test itself has quietly changed.
Event rules can shift by level too, which changes how you read a result. The same shot put distance can read as a strong mark in a younger division and an ordinary one further up, because the implement and the competition both change. Judge both on one yardstick and you mislead yourself about both.

Tracking Only Meet Results

Changing the Test Between Rounds
A test is only useful if it stays identical. A 30m fly timed by hand one week and by a gate the next is two different tests, and the comparison is worthless. Lock the start line, the rest, the surface, and the timing method, then leave them alone all season.
Comparing Across Divisions and Implements
A distance thrown with a heavier implement, or a time run in an older division, is not the same test as last year. Context matters. Keep it attached to every number so an age-up dip does not read as a decline.
Tracking Too Many Numbers
Twenty metrics per athlete is a spreadsheet you will abandon by June. Pick the few numbers that actually change your coaching, and drop the rest. A short list you update every week beats a long one you fill in twice.
